Exploring the Mentawai island: a family guide part 2

PART 2 - WHERE TO STAY

Since their discovery in the 1990s, the Mentawai Islands, located off Sumatra’s West Coast, have revolutionized surf travel. This chain of approximately 70 islands features an impressive concentration of perfect waves, with more than 50 renowned surf spots including top breaks like Hollow Trees and Macaronis. Initially, boats were the primary way to access these isolated waves. However, in recent years, numerous land camps have developed, offering stable accommodations and speedy access to the surf by speedboat.

The Mentawai archipelago, located off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, consists of four main islands: Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, and South Pagai. Siberut, the largest, is renowned for its rich indigenous culture and lush rainforests, offering a unique glimpse into traditional Mentawai lifestyles. Sipora is a hub of activity, home to the region's capital, Tua Pejat, and famous surf spots like Lance's Right. North and South Pagai are known for their seclusion and pristine natural environments, providing idyllic settings for surfing and relaxing away from the more developed areas. Each island presents a distinct experience, from vibrant local cultures and bustling surf scenes to tranquil retreats amidst unspoiled nature.

NORTH SIPORA: most family friendly part of the Mentawai?

North Sipora stands out in the Mentawai Islands not only for hosting one of the best waves, Telescopes, but also for its variety of other lefts and rights suited for all surfing levels. Unlike the Playgrounds to the north, which is about an hour away by sail, and HT's to the south, North Sipora is much less crowded. Telescopes, a long, immaculate barreling left, is the crown jewel, especially during larger west swells. Additionally, Scarecrows, while often underestimated, offers consistently good lefts with easy takeoffs and long rides, making it particularly accessible. Other spots like Icelands claim top status as a big-wave spot in the Mentawais, with Suicides, Scarecrows, and Seven Palms providing quality waves that can often be enjoyed in solitude. Surfers who choose to spend more time in North Sipora, resisting the allure of the more renowned waves to the north, are richly rewarded.

North Sipora is a top pick for family trips to the Mentawai Islands thanks to its easy access, comfy family resorts, and waves for all surfing levels. It's less of a hassle to get to than other parts, which is a big plus for families, especially those with kids. Places like Aloita, Awera, and Toska offer a warm welcome with their kid-friendly setups and activities that everyone can enjoy. Plus, the variety of surf spots means there’s something for everyone, whether you’re just starting out or looking to catch a challenging wave. All in all, North Sipora hits the sweet spot for a fun, relaxed family getaway.
