Plant-based dyes part 1: The benefits of natural dyes

The fact that the fashion industry is the third largest polluting industry is not a secret anymore, however one aspect of its impact on the ecosystem, that we don’t always think about, is the damage caused by the synthetic dyes used. Not only those dyes require a lot of water to be produced, but the chemical waste are dumped directly in our waterways. Where large factories are, we see the water of the rivers have the color of the dye produced that day and the soil nearby become toxic.
We, at Juno Basics, as a children brand that claims to be eco friendly, could not be part of this problem any longer, these are the reasons why we have decided to switch entirely to plant-based dyes:

Environmental benefits: Plant-based dyes are derived from renewable sources, such as roots, leaves, flowers, and bark, making them more sustainable and eco-friendly compared to synthetic dyes. The production of synthetic dyes often involves chemical processes that can release harmful pollutants into the environment, contributing to water pollution and soil contamination.

Biodegradability: Natural dyes are biodegradable, meaning they break down naturally over time, reducing their impact on the environment. In contrast, synthetic dyes are often made from non-biodegradable petrochemicals, which can persist in the environment for a long time and pose a threat to ecosystems.

Health considerations: Plant-based dyes are generally considered safer for human health compared to synthetic dyes. Some synthetic dyes have been found to contain toxic substances and carcinogens, raising concerns about their potential impact on consumers and workers in the textile industry. Natural dyes, on the other hand, are derived from plants that have a long history of traditional use and are generally considered non-toxic.

Cultural and traditional significance: The use of natural dyes has a rich cultural and historical significance in various societies around the world. Many indigenous communities have been using plant-based dyes for centuries, and their traditional dyeing techniques often reflect their unique cultural identities. By supporting the use of natural dyes, we help preserve and celebrate these cultural practices.

Aesthetic appeal: Plant-based dyes can produce a wide range of beautiful and subtle colors that are distinct from the standardized and uniform colors commonly achieved with synthetic dyes. The unique and varied shades obtained from natural dyes can add depth and character to textiles and other products.

Reduced water consumption: The dyeing process with natural dyes generally requires less water compared to synthetic dyeing processes, which often involve several washing and rinsing steps to remove excess dye and chemicals.

Potential allergen reduction: Synthetic dyes may cause allergic reactions in some individuals, especially those with sensitive skin. Plant-based dyes, being natural and often less chemically complex, are less likely to trigger allergies.

While plant-based dyes offer numerous advantages, they also have some limitations, such as variability in color intensity and potential fading over time. Additionally, the availability of certain plant materials for dye extraction might be limited in some regions. Nonetheless, the increasing interest in sustainability and eco-consciousness has led to a resurgence of interest in natural dyes, driving research and innovations in this area.
